Portuguese music’s modern history could not be told without mentioning JP Simões. This multi talented musician and drunken fable’s writer comes a long way. Back in the 90’s he meets Luís San Payo, a Pop Dell’Arte’s member. A chat becomes a talk and a guitar becomes the starting point where JP Simões enters the band, a project by the legendary João Peste. The result was the 1995 album Sex Symbol.
This same year he returns to Coimbra, his home town, and furiously embraces the ingenious project Belle Chase Hotel, a very successful band that offered his fans the albums Fossanova (1998) and La Toilette des Étoiles (2000). In 2003 he starts another quest: to write a musical comedy, Ópera do Falhado, directed by João Paulo Costa, music by JP Simões and Sérgio Costa. A year later the album Exílio by Tati quintet is out, presenting mixed styles from the waltz through the tango and the rumba, featuring excellent Latino American musicians.
In 2007 JP Simões signs what was to become his masterpiece: 1970 is considered the album of the year by many well known critics. This record presents a set of wonderful songs in which we can discover the influences of the genius Chico Buarque. But not only Buarque’s geniality influences JP Simões, David Bowie, Tom Waits, Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Leonard Cohen, Cole Porter and Sérgio Godinho are some other stars shinning upon him while he composes his fabulous music.
Boato is the second JP Simõe’s solo album recorded live in Jardins de Inverno, Teatro São Luiz, in Lisbon, by Cantigas da Rua. Boato features twelve original themes and some “oldies” from Belle Chase Hotel, Ópera do Falhado and Quinteto Tati.
